Josh's 3rd Birthday Party

We were invited to go to Josh's birthday party at the CMH this morning. Andrew was feeling a little under the weather starting yesterday. I wasn't sure if he was really sick or just a quick bug that was going to pass. And I wasn't sure if he was contagious. But this morning, when I told Andrew that I didn't think he was well enough to go to the party, he got so sad. I normally don't like to take him anywhere when he's mayble sick to avoid infecting any other kids, but the Children's Museum is notorious for germs and it's not like we haven't been infected lots of times at the museum. I let Aunt Anh know beforehand what was going on with Andrew and give her fair warning that Andrew was sick. She was very sweet and said it would be all right because she knew that other kids at the museum could be sick as well.

We arrived at the party and was escorted to Josh's party room, which happened to be in the Dragons & Fairies exhibit area, which is a display of Vietnamese culture--totally coincidental and totally ironic.

We said hello to the birthday boy and then, Andrew couldn't wait any longer to go run and play. Andrew and Josh played with the Vietnamese cuisine, musical instruments, boat, and motorcycle.

After all the playing, it was time to eat a little lunch. Anh and Richard had ordered pizza and Anh's mom made banh mi sandwiches too. After we ate, Andrew ran back out to play exploring more parts of the museum. Then, it was time for cake and candles. Andrew and Daddy were still playing somewhere and I couldn't find them (and Daddy didn't hear his phone ringing). By the time I did, they had sung the song and Josh had blown out the candles. :( But Andrew still made it back finally to get a piece of cake.

Daddy left to go to another birthday party (adult not kiddie) of one his former Rice classmates, but Andrew and I hung around longer to play. We first went to the library to read some books. And then we met up with Josh in the grocery store. The boys had so much fun scrambling around getting groceries and putting them in their baskets. After a short stint in Tot Spot, we headed back downstairs and played a little in PowerPlay where Josh and Andrew had fun dancing.

It was finally time to go home and get Andrew down for a nap. I had hoped that by staying so long at the museum, he would be so worn out and conk out in the car, but no luck. And then, he lied down in bed for two hours and never fell asleep. I couldn't believe it. I was so frustrated!! I finally gave up and took him downstairs to play. I figured if he skipped his nap, he could just go to bed early. I don't like for him to take a late nap and then go to bed so late. He wanted to watch a little Dora so I let him. And sure enough, he fell asleep like ten minutes into the episode. I carried upstairs and let him sleep with Daddy. Little punk!!

Anyhow, it was a great party. Andrew had such a great time. Thanks for the invite, guys! Happy 3rd Birthday, Josh! We love you very much!!

Aunt Thuy's Pool

This morning, we went to meet up with Aunt Thuy who invited us to hang out at her neighborhood pool. The pool had a whole kid area with lots of water features. Andrew was so excited when he saw it! He tried to walk straight in before I could even put his sunblock on.

Drew was really good at the pool and was having crazy amounts of fun. We went around the whole area a few times. He loved all the water sprouts and also their kiddie pool. He kept going back and forth between the two kid areas (with different water depths). He was definitely becoming more adventurous walking into deeper water all the way up to his chin standing on his tippy toes. He also swam around with both of us. I wasn't sure if he would trust Thuy to take him around, but he wasn't phased in the slightest. He went right to her.

Of course, after we played, he didn't want to leave. But Aunt Thuy had to get home to take care of some work and we had to get home to eat lunch and nap. It was an awesome morning--and the weather was immaculate too! There were only a few other people there which made it really nice too. Thanks so much, Aunt Thuy, for inviting us and hanging out with us this morning!!

Astros vs. Cubs

Tonight, we took Andrew and Aunt Monica to the Astros vs. Cubs game tonight. We hadn't been back to Minute Maid Park since last year so we thought it was fine time to head back there. First, we love the Cubs too. And second, we got really cheap tickets--$1. They were nose bleed tickets, but it was so empty that we sat down by first base without any problems.

Andrew couldn't keep his eyes and mind off the train. He kept wanting it to whistle and go, but unfortunately, the Stros didn't hit any homers for us. Andrew was very disappointed. But we tried to keep him interested in the game as much as we could. When Andrew got a little antsy, Daddy took him on a walk around. And later, Monica and I got him ice cream and cotton candy.

It was the sixth inning that we decided to call it a night so we could get Andrew to bed. As we walked out of the ballpark, we decided to wait for the seventh inning stretch so we could sing the songs with Andrew. He enjoyed both Take Me Out to the Ballgame, which we play at home and Deep in the Heart of Texas, which he liked the clapping parts.

We put Andrew to bed without any problems. And I just saw online that the Astros won the game...Berkman hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh!! What incredible timing! I am pretty bummed, but I guess there is nothing I can do about it now. And it was already getting too late. We couldn't have waited much longer. So, hopefully, next time Andrew will get to see some train action and maybe even some fireworks.

Back to Bellaire

I know I have posted videos from our previous outings at the Bellaire Library, but we had a great time today with our friends, Ms. Rose and Thomas, who happened to be there this morning too. Andrew did great with the stories, songs, and craft projectat the end (a paper monkey puppet). He gets more into it every time. I love how he tries to follow along. He has been totally digging the Tooty Ta and Baby Bumblebee songs so much that he wants to do them at home and in the car.

But another reason for this superfluous post is that the story time will be on hiatus until after school starts and also, Miss Missy is getting married in October and will be taking some time off. So, I am not sure when the next time we'll be back here.

Happy 29th Month Birthday!

Happy 29th Month Birthday, Andrew! I can't believe you are almost two and a half years old! You are growing up too fast!

Here are some things that Andrew has been doing this past month that I want to remember and for him to read about...

Andrew definitely talks much more as the days pass. He is very big on repeating whatever we say. He is trying so hard to talk more. We are so proud of the progression he had made regarding his speech. Andrew will say sentences like "Mama, sit down here" or "Daddy, get back there" (referring to sitting in the back of the train). In speech therapy, they have made an effort to increase his utterances. One concept they taught Andrew was to encourage him to use the phrase "I want" instead of just calling out whatever he wants. This way, instead of just asking for "milk", it is more like "I want milk please, Mama."

Sometimes, he will say "Mommy". I usually say "Mama" but have said "Mommy" a few times as well as other people. I don't know how much longer I will be "Mama." I am still hoping to delay it a little while longer, but it might be a lost cause. Andrew also repeats some parts of the Our Father at bed time and will say "amen" accordingly. And when he is excited, Andrew will yell "yeah hoo" instead of "whoo hoo." We think he got this from Mickey Mouse Choo Choo Express.

He will also say "cheese" when we take pictures of him, which helps me get some decent pictures of him looking at the camera instead of away somewhere. But other times, he is just saying "cheese" but looking elsewhere. Though, he does do a cheesy grin sometimes, which cracks me up. He can be such a ham at times! He loves to review the pictures afterwards too. He says "Thanks, Mama." But a lot of that is on me because I say "thanks" more than "thank you."

Andrew also tries to sing songs now like Happy Birthday and Choo Choo Boogie usually singing the last word of the line or parts of the chorus. Also, when you ask him "How are you?", he will respond "good" or lately, "fine." Andrew has been perfecting his stall tactics too. When Andrew wants to play longer before eating or sleeping or going somewhere, he says "one minute." And lately, when I ask him who he loves the most, he replies "NiNi" or "choo choos." Gotta love his priorities.

Drew's infatuation with fire trucks continues to grow. When we are in the car driving home, he asks to go "that way" to see the fire station and normally points in the right direction (scary, huh?) He knows that we have to go a little out of our way to drive past one near our house.

As much as he loves fire trucks now, he still loves trains more. Drew plays with his GeoTrax trains everyday and lots of it. They have definitely moved up the ranks in favorite toys. He still plays with his Thomas trains, but I think he has been playing more with the GeoTrax set ever since we got more tracks and trains for him. He loves the remote control train called Steamer and also the tunnel that Aunt Monica got him for his birthday. He will lift up and push down the gate accordingly.

Andrew is still so great about pretending. We cook a lot including pizza, cake, cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts. He will also pretend to blend Jamba Juice smoothies even pretending to bang the blender to pour the drink into the cup. And he loves to pretend to cook in his tents too! Andrew loves to pretend driving a train or an airplane especially when he is sitting in his car seat on long car rides.

Drew has also made up his own little creations. When he jumps off the stairs (bottom step only) or off the curb, he says it's a "choo choo jump." It's his normal jump; there is nothing different but that he calls it something different. I have no idea where he got the idea from, but it has grown to "choo choo kisses" and "choo choo hugs."

Andrew still loves books. We read them all the time especially for night night. One thing Andrew likes to do is read "Barnyard Dance" and act it out. He also has certain parts of some of his books memorized like "Freight Train" and some of his Curious George books.

He has been watching some of "Finding Nemo." I like to skip some of the scary parts. One of our favorite parts is Crush and the rest of the turtles. Andrew will say "dude" and "sweet" to imitate Crush. Andrew still watched Mickey Mouse Choo Choo Express and Dora the Explorer still too.

Lately, he has been eating a lot of cherries. I will cut them to remove the seeds, but sometimes, he will like to bite around the seeds. Andrew has been eating lots of blueberries this month because they have been so sweet. One night for night night snack, he killed a third of a pint. He wanted more, but we stopped him. Andrew is obsessed with Chick Fil A. He will eat his chicken strips and fruit cup (except for the apples). Then, he knows that afterwards, he gets an ice cream cup. Every time we drive past one, he totally recognizes their logo will say "Chick Fil A." He also is big into Jamba Juice and recognizes their logo as well. Andrew is also proving that he is a rat in the Asian Zodiac eating cheese. He loves it in sliced, grated, shredded, and string form. One day, he ate three slices for breakfast and three for lunch.

Andrew also likes to drink the V8 Fusion fruit and vegetable juice. We like it because it's healthy for him getting nutrients from fruits and veggies and Andrew likes it because it tastes pretty good. He doesn't know it has veggies in there since we just call it fruit juice.

Andrew also likes for me to cut his food into strips, which he calls "choo choo strips" since they look like trains. He is getting to be very independent wanting to hold his food and bite off a piece. At night night, he still likes a snack no matter if he just ate something downstairs just prior to. The normal is two bags of fruit snacks.

My son also takes after me and loves to eat ice cream. He almost always asks for some when we go out to eat. We usually tell him he can only get if he eats well, but I don't think this really alters how much he eats. Drew has been really big into chips especially the barbeque ones and Cheetos. I guess it figures since he likes barbeque sauce and cheese so much. We try to limit how much he eats chips, but if not, I think he could really take out quite a bit.

Andrew is very into eating at restaurants. We can't just pick up the food and eat at home. He always wants to "eat there." When we are driving, he likes to point out eating establishments and will ask to "eat there." This is probably a product of how much we go out to eat as it is.

He is still big on everyone having everything at meal times like plates, drinks, and food. And he still doesn't understand that some people may not want to eat a particular food or are full or don't like everything on their plate at once (yes, that's Mommy). But I love that he cares about all of us eating together and sharing food.

Andrew is still our social butterfly wanting to play with both adults and kids. He will grab their hand and try to pull them to where he wants to play. At Gymboree, he will try to get other kids to play trains with him. Gavin will occassionally, but most of the time, we have to explain to him that sometimes, people don't want to play trains and that it is ok if they don't.

Andrew definitely whines and fusses more and sometimes, over the silliest things like which cup he wants to drink out from or if he is trying to get another book read to him before naptime or bedtime. I am looking forward to him growing out of his phase.

Unfortunately, Andrew has been very into talking about "butts" and "poo poo". He likes to talk about other people's posteriors and excrement. We will ask him to desist this inappropriate talk and have to put him in timeout to reprimand him.

He has been really good lately about going to sleep. There are some evenings when he goes straight to sleep without climbing out of the bed and coming into the hallway. Then, there are nights when he comes out two or three times, but he's getting better.

Andrew is sleeping a little better now...or at least, longer. He sleeps at least an hour for naps if not an hour and a half. Here and there, he will take a two hour nap, which gives me such a nice break. Sometimes, I end up napping too. Also, Andrew will sleep through night pretty regularly now. Of course, if we aren't at home or if he's sick, then all bets are off. Daddy and Mommy still wake up in the middle of night wondering if Andrew is okay since he's not in bed with us.

One thing new to the bed time routine is that he doesn't get any milk after bed time if he wakes up in the middle of the night. He only gets water or juice. Also, he only gets one sippy cup full of milk before bed time.

Andrew is still very affectionate thankfully. Poor thing has to give me a morning, afternoon, and good night kiss every day. And I get lots of hugs too!! For other people, he is really good about hugging them especially family and his little buddies. And for those who he doesn't like to hug or kiss, Andrew has finally learned to blow up knuckles. He also does double knuckles by bumping both fists.

We haven't had any more movement on the potty training this month. He's not too interested anymore. He will sit on the toilet and try to pee for a few minutes and then say "all done" and want to get off. We aren't pushing him only asking if he wants to try to pee in the potty. We know that he will do it when he's ready. Though he does like to tell us that he's farted. He thinks it's funny. Hmm, where does he get that from!?

However, Andrew will also tell me when he pooped so we can change his diaper. Then again, sometimes I know he has and will ask him if he has and he will say he hasn't. I don't know why he feels the need to lie about it.

Andrew is also very fond of picking his nose. We actually let him pick it at first thinking it was a good idea because he wouldn't let us remove his boogers like when he was sick. So, he started to get his own out. But now, we see him picking it just whenever. Yes, he normally gets something out of it, but I would rather not see him do it so often. We are trying to curb this habit.

But for all the difficulties we have faced with Andrew, he is still very sweet and loving. I love that he is so concerned about other people and thinks about others. I wish this carried over more in terms of sharing toys, but better than nothing. And he has gotten better about sharing so hopefully the trend continues. It's been a fun month and it gets funner the more Andrew learns and the more that he can do. Can't wait to see what next month brings!

Here's some video from earlier this month of Andrew doing a little Kung Fu Fighting with Daddy!

Lin Twins' One Month Celebration

Tonight, we attended the celebration dinner in honor of the Twin Lins' first month hosted by Aunt Belinda's parents.

Andrew and his little buddies were really cute together. They played lots of cars and trains. They also colored and even played Ring around the Rosy. Andrew was too scared to join them at first, but later wanted to do it when the other kids didn't want to. Maybe next time, little man. You will learn if you snooze, you lose. ;) Later, Evan and Andrew spent a good amount of time watching video clips on Aunt Monica's and Mommy's phone.

The food was delicious; we all ate incredibly well, including Andrew who dined on shrimp, lobster, peking duck buns, and watermelon. Mr. and Mrs. Woo did an awesome job of picking out the menu. We were so stuffed!!

We were so honored to be included on this special occasion and had a great time with great friends and great food.

Bellaire Aquatic Center

We finally made it back to the Bellaire Aquatic Center today. I didn't want to take him until he was comfortable back in the water and we just hadn't had the chance to yet.

Right after we arrived, I saw Palmer and his dad, Devin, and went to say hi. We hadn't seen Palmer in such a long time that it was a really nice surprise. Palmer and Andrew played together for a bit, but as kids do, they ventured off in different directions to do what they each wanted to do. Then, they would play together for a bit and then go off again.

Andrew was having fun with all the water features. He even tried to walk to the big slide to ride it. We had to explain to him that it was for big kids and adults who know how to swim by himself. He seemed okay with our reasoning and left it at that. But he did ride the frog slide by himself more than a few times and even tried going down on his stomach after watching Palmer do it.

We wanted to get some lunch and go home for naps, but Andrew didn't want to leave of course. We said that maybe we could come back after nap if we had time, which helped getting him to leave without any hysterics. And we also told him we were going to Chick Fil A, which helped ease the blow too.

When he woke up, we asked him what he wanted to do; and of course, he said he wanted to go back to the "water park." So, we ended up taking him back for a little while. Drew had a great time again. He totally loves the water!! Though, this time around, we couldn't get him off the snow cones. He had seen the trailer in the morning, but it hadn't opened yet. But now, there was pretty much no way around it. He was so persistent about getting one. So, we got him right before we left the pool because we knew that would be another battle in itself. Little victories...sometimes, we got to take what we can get.

Beach Waves

Since Andrew and I were going down to visit Papa and Ngoai today, they asked Andrew if he wanted to go to the beach or Kemah. For whatever reasons, he chose the beach. At the beginning, it was pretty much the same thing...Andrew just playing the sand and not too interested in the water. But then after a little while, I took him down to get his hands and feet wet and just casually asked him if he wanted to go jump the waves with me holding him (totally thinking that he would say "no"). But, he totally caught me off guard when he said "yes." I couldn't believe that Andrew finally wanted to not only go into the water but also jump the waves with us. His willingness to go in water has progressed leaps and bounds, literally and figuratively. I just think it's hilarious how much he has overcome his fears with the struggle we have had this summer. That's the main reason for the post tonight. I want to remember how fickle kids can be.

We were having so much fun except when he swallowed too much water. We had to keep reminding him to keep his mouth close. Finally, he grew weary of the waves and said he wanted to go back to play in the sand some more. So, that's what we did until we left for home. I am so proud of my little man and his bravery.

Also, off topic, we had our appointment with our ENT this morning before we headed to League City. Dr. Raynor examined Andrew's tonsils and she didn't think they were enlarged enough to warrant removed. She said they were average sized. Also, she didn't know how much removing them would help Andrew's sleeping. She also looked at Andrew's nostrils and said she wasn't sure if the nasal sprays would help much either. So, I guess we will have to go back to Dr. Rotenberg and see if there is anything else we can do to help my sweet baby sleep better.

I didn't get any pictures of Andrew jumping the waves since all three of us were in with him, but I got a few of him and the grandparents.

CMH Play Date with Andrew

This morning, we met up with Mrs. Gina and Andrew Reid at the Children's Museum for a play date. We hadn't had a play date with them in such a long time--it was way overdue. And the boys are so cute together!! At first, Andrew didn't want very interested in playing with the other Andrew going off on his own. He played a lot with the trucks and blocks building tunnels. It was hard because Andrew would let go of his trucks to build a tunnel when another kid would come and grab the trucks away from him. Luckily, Andrew was in a sharing mood and didn't put up too much of a stink and Mommy was able to find some replacements as well. He is starting to really understand that sometimes, we just have to share with others. He's not happy about it, but he will do it. Later on, both Andrews had lots of fun sliding down the slide together.

Then, my Andrew said he was getting hungry and wanted to eat downstairs. Gina and Andrew were ready to eat too so we headed for the cafeteria. The boys ate very well and both were chip fiends with the Cheetos we got. They killed both bags and still wanted more! I guess all that running and playing built up their appetites.

Bath Tablets

So, I read about these Sesame Street bath tablets that fizz up and color the water. The tablets come in red, yellow, and blue and can be mixed. Of course, Andrew wanted green when we tried them out tonight. They were a hit!! Not that he doesn't love bath time already, but it made things more fun and interesting. Hopefully, we can use these to get him to learn his primary and secondary colors too. Fun and educational--can't beat it!?

Memorial Park Pool

This evening, we took Andrew back to Memorial Pool since he's getting more and more comfortable with the water and we wanted to keep that momentum going. Andrew did great again "swimming" around. And he even went back on the slide with Daddy. He even made me go once with them, but I feel bad for taking a spot in the line with all the kids.

Puzzles

Well, maybe Andrew does take after his mother in some regards...he like jigsaw puzzles. I used to love doing them when I was a kid. Since Andrew liked the fire truck puzzle so much, we talked about getting him some of his own to work on his hand-eye coordination and visual-spatial intelligence. When we saw the Thomas one at Target, we thought it would be a good one to start with.

So, we gave it a try with Andrew after bath tonight. We were scared it would be too hard for him or he would lose interest in it. But he did a pretty good job with it. We had to help him quite a bit, but for some of the pieces, he got it by himself.
