Gaming

We spent the afternoon over at Uncle 10's house and Andrew spent most of his time playing this Sonic the Hedgehog racing game with the cousins, especially Lam. Drew was having a blast. He got better throughout the afternoon.

Anyway, I thought the pair looked so sweet playing together.

Huffington Park

Andrew and I tried out Huffington Park today; I had found out about it online and saw they had this pirate themed playground. I figured since Andrew is so into pirates these days, he might like it. And it did not disappoint!

We pretended we were pirates sailing the high seas for a good while. After, we explored the rest of the park before it was time to leave. We will definitely be back!

Happy 47th Month Birthday

Another month has come and gone and Andrew is now one month away from his fourth birthday!!

Some things we hear from our almost four year old include that he will do bad things "never again" or for the right things "do it everyday". He has even told me, "Don't yell at me!" when I am reprimanding him.

A while back, Andrew had an accident peeing in his pants. He told his dad, "Don't tell Mom!" I couldn't believe it. Already trying to hiding things from Mommy. But Daddy told him to tell me and he did without fussing. But his accidents are too frequent and he is doing pretty good about being dry at night, but we still put pull ups on him just in case.

Andrew loves to ride his new bicycle. I think he actually may ask to ride it everyday. He is really getting the hang of it and his pedaling is improving quickly. He can turn very sharp turns...sometimes, I think he is going to hit our neighbors' garage door, but turns at the very last second and misses it. He loves riding bikes with Emily around the courtyard. I am so proud of the way he's taking to bike riding.

He also likes to play Cars 2 dominoes. He doesn't get too competitive about winning, which is good. Andrew is still very big into LEGOs. He probably plays LEGOs just about everyday. Drew still builds trains, trucks, and buildings, but is getting more elaborate in his building.

Andrew is into pirates and superheroes. He still loves to pretend to be a pirate and his ship is our couch. And thanks to Mr. Sanchez, Andrew is getting more into superheroes. His favorites so far are Superman, Spiderman, and Batman.

He has been watching Cars 2 and Tangled on the iPad a lot. He could watch them everyday if we let him. His favorite part of Tangled is the I Have a Dream scene. He laughs hysterically. Andrew has been watching Sid the Science Kid, WordWorld, and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. It cracks me up that he is watching Mister Roger having watched that myself when I was little. He loves the trolley mostly.

Andrew still enjoys movie night complete with popcorn. He will even draw up his own ticket. Recently, he has watched WALL-E and The Incredibles.

We have a carnivore on our hands. He is really big into eating meat especially kalbi (Korean short ribs), thit nuong (Vietnamese chargrilled pork), and Mongolian Beef from Pei Wei. One time, I ordered the Mongolian Beef to share and he ate all but two pieces of the meat. He doesn't eat much rice, but we order it with broccoli and he will eat that.

He also has moved onto Chick Fil A sandwiches, but still orders nuggets sporadically. Andrew always reminds me to order his without pickles. He still likes grilled cheese sandwiches.

For breakfast, Andrew has been eating lots of Toaster Strudel lately because it comes with a green frosting for the holiday season. Also, Andrew has been more into the Horizon milk boxes and loves all the flavors (vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate).

He is still singing Jingle Bells even though Christmas is over. Andrew also loves the Cars and Cars 2 soundtracks especially Real Gone, Life is a Highway, and You Might Think.

Andrew is more into his upcoming activities. He asks about when he will play soccer again. And he is stoked about his upcoming birthday and birthday party. We have decided on a Cars 2 party and he can't wait. He's pretty funny and asks "when Christmas be again?"

And Andrew is enjoying gymnastics even more now and adores his new coach, Cortney. Coach Cortney runs a tight ship and works the boys really hard, but he is a lot of fun.

In terms of independence, we are still trying to get Andrew to work on dressing himself. He is able to put on his shirts, pants, and underwear (but no buttons or snaps). We are working on him putting on his own socks now. In addition, he is enjoying brushing his teeth more that we got him a Thomas spin toothbrush.

And lately, he is skipping more and more naps, but he knows he has to go to bed early.

He is doing very well with morning drop off at school with Ms. Edgett on Mondays. We have talked to him about starting to do it twice a week (one day would be without Ms. Edgett) when he's four.

Nothing has changed too much in terms of Andrew's grieving. He will still say at different times "I miss Matthew" and that "Matthew in Heaven". And we are hearing a lot more questions about "when we have a new baby?" We just tell him we have to wait to see what the doctors say about us having another baby.

Daddy's Back at Rice

No, James is not going back to school (well, not yet anyway)!!

Today, Daddy started his new job at Rice as the Associate Director of the El Paso Finance Center at the Jones School of Business. Several weeks ago, James attended a Wright Fund event at Rice and was talking to his old Finance professor, Dr. Jill Foote. Dr. Foote told a few people there was a position available at Rice and looking for possible applicants and referrals. Later, James contacted Jill and let her know he was interested. Jill was thrilled and even told James that she was hoping he would throw his name into the ring. She pushed his resume through the necessary channels and an interviewed was scheduled quickly. Everyone involved was excited about James applying for the job including the Dean of the school. A few weeks later, James was offered the position, which he excitedly accepted.

But don't get us wrong, James is terribly sad about leaving Woodway. He has had four and a half great years there. He had met some amazing people especially his boss, Rick Morales. Rick has taught James a lot and without this job, James would not have been in the position to get the job at Rice. Some say that most people don't quit jobs, but quit their bosses. But this was definitely not the case. It was one of the downfalls about taking the new position. But the opportunity was too good to pass up.

James will be in charge of the Finance Center, which is where the Jones School has computer terminals loaded with financial software like Bloomberg and Capital IQ. He will be responsible for teaching the students how to utilize these software programs. Another responsibility of the job will be assisting in the Rice Summer Business Institute, which is a two week summer program where the Jones School hosts about forty underprivileged students and give them a foundation in the business world. The students will be taught basic business courses, hear speakers from all over the business community, and even get to tour a few companies here in Houston.

The position is a great mix between teaching and finance, which is such a great thing for James. He has been missing teaching over the years. And of course, he is so happy to be back at Rice. He will get more vacation time and have some flexibility with his work schedule and can even work from home sometimes!! James will maybe be able to get his PhD that he has been talking about ever since business school (but not for awhile). There are lots of advantages and benefits with this new position. We are so so happy!

Congratulations, Daddy!!! We are so proud of you and know you will be great!!

Here are more pictures of Andrew from today via my cell phone. We know the reason Daddy works so hard is to provide for our family and we love him so dearly for it!

Happy Year of the Dragon

Happy Lunar New Year!!

It's the year of the dragon and since James and I are both dragons, it's supposed to be a good one. We sure hope so!

We wish everyone a year of happiness, love, and prosperity.

I went to his class today for a little informational lesson about the New Year like I did last year. I got a couple of books about it as well as showed the kids photos and videos of the lion dancing, which is always the big hit. This year, we gave the kids an orange (supposedly good luck), Play Doh, a coloring sheet, and of course, li xi.

Here's our rat with his Li Xi envelope. Yes, he's a rat, but it's all okay because rats, monkeys, and dragons get along. And we have a ton of those in our family--Uncle Foo and David are rats and Uncle Hung and Uncle John are monkeys.

Six Months Later

It's been six months since we said goodbye to Matthew. Six months ago, my world was turned upside down and I am still reeling from the loss. In so many things that I have read and been told, six months was supposed to be this milestone when people were better able to deal with their loss. And it was getting a little easier for me with the passing of the holiday season. But then, a little while ago, I had a dream about losing him. I woke up feeling the loss of Matthew all over again and it's stayed with me since then.

I am still very sad, but I do feel that I am able to cope better. I don't cry everyday anymore, which is positive I feel. But there are some days, when I cry all the time. The pain is not as raw, but is still ever-present. I miss Matthew so much it literally hurts my heart. I still feel this huge gaping hole in my heart and my soul. I still ache from Matthew's absence from our lives. I keep thinking that he would be six months old and would be learning to sit up, crawling, eating baby foods, and whatever else my brain decides to torture me with.

Sometimes, I think it's funny how life still goes on. Our day was so busy today and I don't know if that's God's way to take my mind off things or because we have to move on and put our lives back together again without Matthew here. But no matter how busy we are or what we have going on, I still feel the sadness and always think of my baby boy up in Heaven.

We should be learning about the results of the genetic testing soon. My doctors recommended us to wait six months before trying to get pregnant again to let my body heal and of course to hear the results of the tests. James and I have started talking about trying again. We know we would like another baby, but of course, have reservations and are worried. We can't bear the thought of losing another baby. But we will see what the the geneticist says and go from there.

Here are the lyrics and video to another song that I have been listening to. I had heard the song before and liked it, but I heard a group sing it on The Sing Off and for whatever reason, it has stuck with me ever since. The images below are prints I asked Thuy to create for us. They are actually true to scale of Matthew's hands and feet. We put them in a double frame to give to our family.

Feels Like Home written by Randy Newman

Something in your eyes
Makes me want to lose myself
Makes me want to lose myself
In your arms
There's something in your voice
Makes my heart beat fast
Hope this feeling lasts
The rest of my life
If you knew how lonely my life has been
And how long I've been so alone
If you knew how I wanted someone to come along
And change my life the way you've done

It feels like home to me
It feels like home to me
It feels like I'm all the way back where I come from
It feels like home to me
It feels like home to me
It feels like I'm all the way back where I belong

A window breaks down a long dark street
And a siren wails in the night
But I'm alright 'cause I have you here with me
And I can almost see through the dark there is light

If you knew how much this moment means to me
And how long I've waited for your touch
If you knew how happy you are making me
I never thought I'd love anyone so much

It feels like home to me
It feels like home to me
It feels like I'm all the way back where I come from
It feels like home to me
It feels like home to me
Feels like I'm all the way back where I belong

It feels like I'm all the way back where I belong

Kavin's 2nd Birthday Party

This afternoon, Aunt Monica, Andrew and I drove up to The Woodlands for Kavin's 2nd birthday party. We left Daddy at home to rest and study. I know I am crazy for trying to go to three birthday parties in one weekend much less one day, but we didn't want to miss any of the parties for our beloved friends.

I had hoped that Andrew would fall asleep on the drive up, but no luck there. But luckily, he wasn't too crazy. He actually behaved very well for all the excitement for one day and not much rest (he was pretty good the whole day really).

Anyways, Brenda had reserved to have the party at The Woodlands Children's Museum. It took us a little while to find it, but when we got there, we were quite impressed. It's quite smaller than the CMH, but it's so cute and very intimate. There was a lot to do--they really packed in a lot of things in a small area. Andrew found a train table (it's like he has a sixth sense or something). And luckily, Kavin joined us and the boys played together a bit. We also played at their Duplos table where Andrew and Monica made a huge tower.

After food and cake, Andrew wanted to go back out to play. We explored a different area of the museum and came across a fire truck and lots of firefighter uniforms. Andrew at first didn't want to put it one, but came around eventually. He must have gone down the pole twenty times!!

Then, we made our way over to an area with construction vehicles and rubber pellets resembling dirt. The birthday boy joined us once again and the boys loved scooping and dumping all the "dirt".

The party was coming to a close so we said our goodbyes and headed home. What a day!! But I am glad we could make it everyone's party. I am totally exhausted!!

Liya's 4th Birthday Party

So, we headed back into town towards Liya's house. The party was well underway and the kids were in the middle of dancing and singing when we got there. Andrew wasn't too interested in the music, but wanted to play in the fake snow that Sabrina had brought in for the party. And Palmer was kind enough to join Andrew back in the snow and play with him.

Soon, it was time for Liya to blow out her birthday cake. Andrew had a small piece of cake where I opted for a cake ball. Both were delicious!! After, Andrew played on the playscape and climbed up and down with Liya and Tessa (Palmer had to leave early because he had another birthday party as well.)

Andrew also wanted to have his hand painted and asked for a fire truck. Poor lady didn't normally paint them, but she said she would try. It was really sweet of her; and Andrew was very happy with his fire truck.

Then, it was time to go so we could get some rest. We had one more party to go to...

Happy Birthday, Liya!! I can't believe this is our third time to go to one of your birthday parties! So glad we are all friends and we got to celebrate it with you.

Evan's 5th Birthday Party

This morning, we drove out to Sugarland for Evan's 5th birthday party. The kids spent most of the time upstairs playing and being crazy. But we did easily pry them away from the toys to come down for the pinata. It was one of those string ones where the kids pull on a string and eventually, the hole will open and the candy will fall out. It probably wasn't as fun for the kids, but much much safer!! It was still fun for them and they really don't care as long as the candy comes out, right?!

We had to leave early to go to Liya's party, but we enjoyed spending time with Evan and his family and friends we hadn't seen in awhile. We are glad we got to go even if we didn't get to stay the entire celebration.

Happy Birthday, Evan!! We love you very much!

King of the World

James and I took Andrew to Hermann Park to play this afternoon. Daddy asked Andrew to make this pose from the movie Titanic! Hilarious!!

Snowman Super Tuesday

When I went to go pick up Andrew from school today, the class was just finishing up their Super Tuesday projects. Today, the kids built a snowman from food like marshamallows, pretzels, and candy. The kids, especially our son, were so excited about their snowmen. I don't know if they liked building it more or eating it!!

Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

This morning after breakfast, we took Andrew and Nonna to visit the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center because we hadn't ever gone there before and had been wanting to check it out.

Upon arrival, we asked the front desk receptionist about how best to tackle the Arboretum with a child and she recommended a few of the trails that might be better for Andrew.

First, Andrew got to play in the little play area they had. And we even saw Mrs. Rose and Tom there as well and got to catch up a bit with them.

Soon thereafter, we set out to walk one of the newer trails that the employee recommended because it had auditory and sensory aids to help enhance the experience. Andrew had fun going up to all the stands to check them out.

Sadly, many of the foliage weren't really alive with it being January and all, but it was still very nicely done. We will definitely need to come back during the springtime.

Emily's 4th Birthday Party

Today, we attended Emily's 4th birthday party at Discover Gymnastics. Andrew adores Emily so he was super excited to go!

When we arrived, most of the kids were playing the foam pit. After stretching, the party helpers divided the kids into groups for rotations around the different aparatuses. Andrew got to jump on the trampoline, play on the bars and balance beam, swing on a rope, and jump down this bouncey runway thing that I don't know what to call.

After playing, the kids marched to the Olympics theme to receive their medals. And then, it was time to sing Happy Birthday to Emily and eat some cake! It was a wonderful party and we are so glad we got to be there with Emily on her big day.

Snowman Art

The artwork from Andrew's class is being showcased in the hall outside his classroom. We are so impressed with Andrew's snowman. Even his teachers commented again on his drawing abilities.

Resident Exterminator

I was sitting on the couch with Andrew today and all of a sudden, he hits my leg. Iwas taken aback until I realized why he had done it. He had killed a mosquito!! My hero! He was so proud of himself for finally getting one. I sent this picture to James of his first kill....

Pretend Emergency

Andrew loves to make up his own emergencies and have all the emergency vehicles come to the rescue. Today, he had them saving his new Playmobil pirate ship that he received from Uncle Anh Tuan from Christmas.

Dominoes

When we were in League City today, Ngoai gave Andrew a Cars 2 dominoes set. So, I taught him how to play and he loved it! I think we played for over an hour straight.
