Time Outs

We have been working on disciplining Andrew with time outs. Sometimes, when he doesn't play nicely with his toys (like throwing his trains on the ground), I put them in time out. And of course, when things are more severe like pulling people's hair, Andrew is put into time out. Of course, Andrew will try to get up or play with something while there, but he is learning. Like I mentioned before, I don't think he understands fully what is going on, but will be somewhat obedient in sitting down until I say he can get up. But the more, he goes into time outs, he is understanding what he is supposed to do. I just have to tell him to sit down and he will. If he tries to get up, I tell him to sit down and usually he will go right back down. Then, when time is up (I try to do a minute and a half), he has to sign sorry and give me hugs.

But there was a new twist to time outs tonight. He bit my side (I think his teeth are bothering him a lot); and I said "no biting" in a harsh tone as a warning. All of a sudden, without any direction from us, he walks over to his time out spot by the gate and sits down. James and I just looked at one another. We couldn't believe our eyes. Did our son really just put himself in time out!!?? We had to keep from laughing out loud!

Shapes

Here is a video clip of Andrew practicing on his shapes puzzle.

**Note: I know it's been quite a while since I last posted, but unfortunately, I have been having computer troubles, which has delayed my uploading pictures and videos and thus, my blogging. But I am now back on Daddy's laptop so please be patient while I play catch up.

More Time With Papa

This morning, we woke up and headed to Gymboree class so that Daddy can see how our weekly (somewhat structured) class compares to the (free-for-all) open gym. It was a little different since Miss Angie wasn't teaching the class and both Mommy and Andrew are so used to how she runs class. But there were lots of similarities so it wasn't too different; and we still had fun.

Then, we headed home to get ready to go down to League City to spend more time with Papa (and Ngoai too--ha ha!) Of course, Andrew played lots with Papa. While Drew was napping, Papa and Ngoai headed over to my Uncle 10's house; and we would follow after Andrew woke up. Andrew was a little shy when we first got there, but by the time he left, he was laughing and playing with everyone especially my twin cousins who came home from the Buddhist temple as we were getting ready to leave. Everyone is so sweet and playful with Andrew...he definitely wasn't attention starved!

UT v. UTEP

We watched the Longhorns play the University of Texas at El Paso here at the house tonight. Uncle Anh Tuan was here; and Auntie Monica came over after work. Auntie Belinda, Uncle Steven, and Evan came over after Evan's nap. Andrew was so excited when I told him Evan was coming over. He was actually on the balcony when they walked up and was saying "eh eh" for Evan.

The boys spent most of the time playing trains playing very well together. But I was so proud when Evan first came over and Andrew gave him Emily as if remembering that Evan wanted to play with Emily the night of the first game.

The adults did some playing of their on in between football games. We played some Wii tennis and had some great laughs. We sure worked up an appetite; and Uncle Steven was kind enough to get us some delicious Vietnamese banh mi (sandwiches) and goi cuon (spring rolls/rice paper). We had a fun time tonight--including a decisive win from the Horns!

We had got these paper Thomas hats from the play date at Toys R Us a while back. The employee gave me a few so I thought Evan might like it.

**Note: I know Drew isn't sporting burnt orange. We meant to change him after his nap, but it just got away from us. And then, we just didn't feel like bothering with it. Why waste a perfectly clean shirt?! I have enough laundry to do as it is. ;)

Unscheduled Trip Home

Papa had been working a few extra Saturdays down in St. Croix and as such, was able to take a few days off to make an unscheduled trip home. At first, Ngoai had planned to make another trip down to the island, but this way, we could all see Papa especially Andrew.

Papa arrived Thursday night late so we drove home to League City on Friday. I had told Andrew several times that we were going to see Papa, but for a while I thought he thought it was going to be on the computer. But when I turned into their subdivision, Andrew started to say "Papa" over and over again. We parked in the driveway and honked the horn. Ngoai came out to greet us as Papa had fallen asleep. She said that Andrew kept saying Papa as he walked into the house, but then stopped to play with his train set and totally forgot about Papa. Nice.

But for real, it was so sweet seeing the two of them together (once Andrew found Papa, that is). Andrew was so happy!! He kept wanting Papa the whole day grabbing his hand or telling him to sit next to him. Even when I was putting Andrew down for his nap, he started to cry for Papa. I told him that Papa would be there when he woke up; and he seemed content with that.

After his nap, Ngoai was going to run to the grocery store for a few items. Andrew said he wanted to go so we obliged. Then, we had a nice dinner with some family and family friends. After, it was time to head home to see Daddy and Uncle Anh Tuan.

One funny thing from today was Andrew's discovery of the microphone. He loved hearing his voice over the speakers. I joked to Daddy that Andrew is Asian after all--the karaoke gene kicked in!! Oh no!!!

I love the picture of Andrew and Papa "singing" to one another. Another highlight was that Aunt Hong and Uncle Hung happen to be wearing green just like Andrew. I thought it made for a nice photo opp.

Happy 19th Month Birthday!

Andrew has been learning lots this past month--I know I will forget to mention lots of things that our nineteenth month old is doing now!!

The most progress that Andrew has made this month was understanding and speaking words. Andrew understands quite a bit of things we say to him. Sometimes, he listens, but sometimes, h doesn't! There are times when we tell Andrew something and he does it that we are just amazed by how much he is comprehending.

Some of his latest words include: "waa" for walk and/or walrus; "wuh" for wheel; "eeee" for eat; "muh" for milk/milkshake; "huu" for here; "buu" for bus (we managed to correct it from him saying "da"; "bah" for bath; and "buu buu" for bubbles. He still says "backpack". Andrew will sometimes say "hey" or "hi", but it's not consistent. But my favorite thing he has learned to say is "yeah". He says it all the time in response to all kinds of questions. Sometimes, we know that he is saying "yeah" just to say it, but there are other times, that I think he really knows what he is saying "yeah" too. It is just too cute though! I will definitely post a video of it soon. Another thing that Andrew says is "mama" as opposed to "mum" or "mom now". I kind of miss mum, but mama just melts my heart too.

Andrew is making some ground with sentences saying two words together...though after much direction from Mommy. He has said "Mama here" when he wanted me to sit next to him on the floor and "Mama walk" one afternoon when he wanted to go outside. He will start by saying each word once by themselves and will string both the words after numerous attempts. We will definitely keep trying to work on this and see if he can get the hang of it.

From our mornings at Baby Time at the Freed-Montrose library, Andrew has learned to sign book and will sign and say "book" at the same time. We have also been teaching Andrew the sign for "sorry". He will basically sign for "please", but we are trying to get him to close his fist correctly. It's close enough for us. He also says "buu buu" for bubbles and also signs for them by tapping his pointer finger and thumb with both hands as if he is popping them.

Also, thanks to the PBS Music Time with SteveSongs and a song called So Many Shapes, Andrew has learned some shapes. He picked up triangle first and will do a makeshift sign where we hold up our hands above our hands making a peak. Andrew is pretty good about picking out triangle shapes in books or wherever he sees them. He is getting better at recognizing squares and circles too. Daddy has been trying to show Andrew letters and numbers (especially during tub time with the crayons). Andrew can usually pick out A and O when he sees them though more so capital As and not lowercase ones.

Andrew is really big into music and acting out songs. As I mentioned in a previous post, he loves to act out The Noble Duke of York with a stuffed animal on his lap. He knows most of the gestures to The Wheels on the Bus (another video I promise). Some of his new favorite tunes include Baa Baa Black Sheep, Row Row Your Boat, Itsy Bitsy Spider (to which he tries to do the spider part), and I've Been Working the Railroad. We are going to have to teach him the alternate version to that for sure!! ;)

Andrew is still a sponge when he comes to learning animals. I think going to the zoo helps him to learn them as fast as he has being able to see them live. He loves penguins and will put out his hands and try to say waddle waddle (because Mommy didn't know what else to do for penguins!) He can point out dinosaurs, squirrels, butterflies, mice, ants, bees, kangeroos, whales, frogs, and octopi (and probably some more). He loves ladybugs and will say "buh" for them as well as other bugs. He can also identify spiders and will mimic the itsy bitsy spider hand gesture.

We have (Daddy mostly) also used bathtime as another opportunity to teach Andrew his body parts while putting soap or lotion on his body. Andrew knows chest, toes, arms, legs, and penis. Yes, you read that right. Since he kept touching/playing with it, I figured we might as well tell him the word for it. And at first, I referred to it as his pee pee, but didn't want to confuse him later with urine. So my thoughts were to just teach him the proper word.

As for playing, Andrew still loves his Thomas trains. He plays with them every day never fail. Drew is able to identify Thomas, Percy, Emily, Billy, and Salty. What is sad is that we don't specifically work on teaching him their names. I suppose he just learned them by us saying them all the time. He doesn't watch the videos as much anymore (good news), but will watch them periodically. Another vehicle that Andrew loves to play with is cars...real cars. He loves to sit in the front seat of my car and play with everything! He will turn all the knobs and press all the buttons. You can imagine our surprise (and mild frustration) when we tried to start the car one evening to go out to dinner and the car didn't start. Apparently, he had left one of the lights on draining the battery. We really were more frustrated because we should have known better and checked that all the lights were off. But safe to say--lesson learned!!

Additionally, Andrew is able to stack blocks better now. He loves to build tunnels for his vehicles to go through (with help from adults). Drew is so much better at shape sorters being able to find the correct slot and put them in correctly by himself sometimes (other times, he still needs a little help). He also has made vast improvements doing puzzles too...being able to find the correct locations and being able to fit the puzzle piece in--for example, his animal puzzles. We got him these alphabet and number puzzles; and he still needs guidance with these.

Moreover, A.J. loves going for walks and playing outside. He is pretty good about holding hands and walking on the sidewalk. I think this boy could walk outside everyday for hours on end. When we take him to the playgrounds, he still doesn't like the swings, but loves slides. We now let him slide down by himself even the big ones...Mommy admits she still gets a little nervous about it. He has gotten so much better about climbing and scaling up the playscapes. We do still have to spot him and help him sometimes though.

As for eating, Andrew is still the same eater and drinker. There are days when he eats like it is going out of style, but other days, when he eats just barely enough. Andrew eats dim sum the best still, but he still loves mac and cheese, pizza, and chicken nuggets. He now likes alfredo pasta, hot dogs, and oatmeal. Drew will eat eggs now, but we have to have it with something else like chorizo or ketchup, but I am just happy he will eat it! He is back to eating bananas and grapes (probably because we got some really sweet batches of grapes lately). Drew is much better about drinking milkshakes--what we call milk and Pediasure even asking for it sometimes. When we are eating out, he will drink plain regular milk or chocolate milk pretty decently which is reassuring.

Andrew runs almost everywhere! I have been told on numerous occasion by other parents how fast they think Andrew is! Lucky me!? Ha ha! Andrew is pretty good about sliding down the stairs, but will still try to walk down them whild holding the railing or wall, which we allow him to every now and then just so he can practice.

Andrew has lots of teeth coming in--two on each side on the top and bottom and two of his left molars. Yes, six at one time. The two molars might be coming in faster than the other four. Poor kid. Sometimes, I think they really bother him because occasionally, he won't want to eat something that he normally will.

Our little boy is still a happy toddler (that's so weird to write versus baby), but his temperment is very much coming through. He can get pretty mad or upset when he doesn't get his way and he will throw a fit, but nothing too bad thankfully. There have been a few times that we have taken his toys away typically for throwing them to which we tell them they are in timeout. Sometimes, he will cry when this happens, but not for too long. We have also tried to put him in timeout for misbehaving usually for pulling hair (yes, unfortunately, he is back to pulling hair). Of course, he tries to get up or cries a bit, but I think he is starting to understand the concept of it. He is getting better about sitting in the assigned area. And I mean more so the concept of what he needs to do versus why he is there. I tell him he is in trouble and what he did wrong, but I don't know if he knows that is his punishment. I don't think he doesn't fully get it. We will see how it goes. I know it is a learning process.

For the most part, he is still a really great kid. He does have his bad moments, but what kid doesn't!? Andrew can be very sweet and loving--and that's so much more than the fiesty and fussy Andrew. There are times when he will come up and hug or kiss me without me asking. He loves to snuggle, which Mommy is so so happy about. He is happy probably 80% of the time. He doesn't cry too much and when he does, he only cries for a little while. I am fully aware that kids can cry harder and longer (I am sure we will experience it firsthand too). We totally count our blessings that we are so lucky to have such a great and amazing son!

Happy Nineteenth Month Birthday, Andrew! Daddy and Mommy love you so very much!

Bowl Head

Andrew has been raiding the Tupperware cabinets again pretending to cook. He loves to stir and pretends to pour, add ingredients, eat, and drink. He can sure spends lots of time playing with his bowls and can sure make a mess while doing it!

And now adding to that...he pretends that they are part of his wardrobe.

San Antonio

Nonna's close friends from Chicago, Auntie Flo and Uncle Bill, were going in San Antonio for an insurance company convention, so we drove into town to see them this past weekend.

On Friday, Andrew had taken a nap from 5pm-7pm (I guess he was really tired from the visit with the Mahers). After he woke up, we finished packing and got in the car. Along the way, we stopped at a Toys R Us in Katy to buy a Thomas Take Along set to bring to Nonna's house and McDonald's for some dinner. Andrew fell asleep around 9pm; and we got into town around 11:30pm. Andrew woke up for just a bit, but luckily, went back to sleep shortly thereafter.

Saturday morning, we met Aunt Janine, Stephanie, and Thomas for breakfast at a nearby Mexican restaurant so we could get breakfast tacos. Andrew ate a pretty good meal of ham, eggs, and pancakes. Yes, he is finally eating some eggs (thanks to some ketchup). After breakfast, the Gonzaleses came over Nonna's house to visit some more. Daddy got a taste of the past helping Stephanie with some math homework. I tried to help Thomas a bit with some English homework, but needed to put Andrew down for his nap.

Later that afternoon, we headed downtown to meet Flo and Bill at their hotel. Stephanie came along for the ride with us, which Andrew was very happy about. He loves his cousins so much! We had such a great visit with Flo and Bill. Andrew took quickly to them both even before they gave him a stuffed dog and one of their pamplets with a train on it. We even went down to the Riverwalk to see the boats--Andrew was giddy! Then, it was time to leave as Flo and Bill had to get back to their convention.

We drove straight up back to North San Antonio to Thomas's flag football game. We were a little late getting there as we got lost; and I was sad that we missed his touchdown pass. But at least we got to see a little of it. After the game, we headed home to eat dinner and watch the UT game. Andrew took a bath and played with his trains and other toys and then went to bed. Thankfully, the Horns beat the Red Raiders!! Texas! Texas! Yee Haw!!

Sunday morning, Andrew woke up around 7:30am, but Daddy wasn't ready to get up (he wasn't feeling all that great). While Nonna cooked breakfast, I took Andrew to play bubbles outside, which he is back into. After breakfast, Daddy and Nonna headed to church while Andrew and I stayed back so Andrew could take his nap. Then, we headed for Alamo Cafe for lunch--one of our favorites there is the tortilla soup. Andrew didn't eat that great, but did enjoy all the water fountains there. After lunch, we drove to a park to let Andrew play a bit. He had a great time on the slides going down by himself.

Afterwards, we packed up our things and headed to Aunt Janine's house to visit before we drove back to Houston. Andrew loved being with the Gonzaleses and Bandit--running around and playing with everyone. He even had a bit of their steak dinner. Andrew isn't shy about signing to eat when he sees food whether or not he really wants to eat. By then, it was getting late so we got in the car and started our drive back. Andrew was very good in the car and was asleep most of the way.

It was a crazy fast weekend. I don't know where the time went!! Of course, we didn't get to see everyone that we wanted to see or do everything that we wanted to do. Maybe next time? Thanks to Nonna for having us and thanks for the Gonzaleses for hanging out with us! And thanks to Auntie Flo and Uncle Bill for taking some time out of their busy schedule to see us. It was so wonderful seeing you guys!

The Mahers

Daddy met Uncle Brian when Daddy accepted the coaching and teaching job at Marshall High School in San Antonio back in 2002. Brian was the head soccer coach, an assistant coach on the football team, and a fellow history teacher. It was near impossible that they wouldn't be spending a lot of time together. But thankfully, they totally hit it off right from the start as did his wife, Aunt Sally, and me. So, the four of us spent quite a bit of time together from games to dinners to just hanging out. They are such an amazing couple; and we love them dearly. Well, they still live in San Antonio with their two sons, Chance (age 4) and Brandon (age 2). We try to see them when we can, but it is never as much as we would like. As it turned out, Brandon had an appointment with a doctor here in Houston, so the Mahers were going to come for a visit!!

They arrived late Thursday night after Andrew went to sleep. We hung out and caught up a bit and played with Chance and Brandon. Then, it was quite late so we all went to bed to get some rest.

We all woke up early Friday morning (well, Andrew and I slept in a bit). Daddy headed to work while Brian, Sally, and I got ourselves and the boys ready. Brian, Sally, and Brandon headed out for their 9am appointment; and Chance, Andrew, and I headed for the zoo.

I bought the wagon for the boys; and they both sat great for the entire zoo. They were able to get out when they wanted/needed in order to see the animals and were great about getting back in. Chance was so sweet and so well behaved. I think Andrew took his lead and followed suit. I asked Chance if he liked the carousel to which he replied "yes." So, I took the boys for a ride--of course, Andrew opted to sit on the bench while Chance chose the zebra. After the zoo, I took the boys for a ride on the train. Again, both boys behaved very well and sat nicely on the train. Then, we headed to McDonald's for Happy Meals and then to the house to wait for Brian, Sally, and Brandon. Chance and Andrew ate and played very well together while we waited.

For lunch, since Brian, Sally, and Brandon were already down in the Medical Center, we met them at Joe's Crab Shack (and also because they have a playground). Daddy was able to meet us for lunch too (hooray!) After Andrew ate a little bit of food, he fell asleep in my lap (it was way past his nap time). Poor thing woke up like 20 minutes later and was so distraught to find out that Daddy wasn't there anymore and had headed back to work.

Initially, the plans were that we would eat dinner in Houston and then head to San Antonio afterwards. But since Chance and Brandon hadn't taken their naps yet and Brian had to work in the morning, the Mahers decided that they would head out of town after lunch to beat the traffic and get home early. This way, the boys could sleep in the car and Brian could get back home and rest before a long day at work on Saturday.

I have to say that I was very proud of Andrew. He played so nicely with Chance sharing his toys. He even gave Chance a hug when they left. And he was really sweet with Brandon. I was kind of scared that he would pull his hair or hit him, but Andrew was very gentle. Even when Brandon touched Andrew's face, Andrew didn't retaliate in any way!

It was a short, but great trip. It was so nice getting to hang out with the Mahers again. It was like old times (that it was so fun), but so different (that we had kids). Brandon is to have a follow up appointment in a few months, so luckily for us, that means the Mahers will be back to visit. Can't wait!

Donovan Park

Tonight, we took Andrew to Donovan Park in the Heights just north of us. Our friends had told us about and we saw it while driving a while back so we wanted to try it out. It was pretty neat--all wooden and very big. Andrew was probably a little too young for it, but that made no difference to him. When we first got there, he took a misstep and fell (but was unscathed) because he wasn't looking. But after that, he did just fine climbing up and down and around. He kept going back to one part that was built to be a train. No surprise there! When I saw it, I thought to myself that Andrew is going to go crazy over this. But he swung a little bit and did a few slides, but that train was the piece de resistance for Drew! He didn't want to go home, but we told him it was a bath time and luckily, we managed to finally persuade him to leave (and without any fuss or tears).

The Noble Duke of York

One of the things we do in Gymboree is we act out the song The Noble Duke of York while the kids on the laps of the adults and we bounced them up and down to the song. Andrew loves this part among other things like bubble time and parachute time.

We have a different version of the song on the iPod (called The Grand Ole Duke of York) with some different words, but close enough for Andrew. Before when it used to come on, he would sit on my lap or Daddy's and we would act it out just like in Gymboree. But one day, Daddy changed it up and put a stuffed animal on Andrew's legs and let Andrew try to act it out. He doesn't quite do it right, but it's good enough (and way cute enough) for Mommy!!

In the first video, he doesn't bounce the stuffed dog with his knees, but his hands. Then, in the second clip, he gets the monkey to join in on the fun and after he laughs, he moves his legs down right along with the song.

Happy Grandparents Day

Andrew is so lucky and blessed to have four wonderful grandparents. We love you all so very much!

UT v. Wyoming

Today, we opted to stay at home and watch the game by ourselves since Andrew and I weren't 100% yet. We started the day by heading out to Toys R Us for a Thomas the Train Play Date to get Andrew out of the house for some youthful fun. I think he was a little overwhelmed because he just watched the kids and everything that was going on. He was hesitant to color or play with the trains. But we got some cool stuff to take home and he has plenty of trains to play with at our house (and four more to boot thanks to a sale they were having in conjunction with the event).

Afterwards, we returned home so Andrew could take his nap (Mommy and Daddy tried to get a nap in too). Andrew slept and ate lunch by the start of the game. During the game (and others that followed today), Andrew played with his toys (mainly his trains); and of course, there were times that Andrew wanted our attention to help him or play with him. We both read books and did puzzles with him among whatever else Andrew wanted to do in the living room. Daddy later took Andrew for a walk after the UT game so he could stretch his legs (while getting the mail). But for the most part, Andrew was a good sport and allowed Daddy and Mommy to watch a good amount of football today. Andrew is getting really cute because he will clap and yell "yeah" to try to mimic us. We will raise a Longhorn football fan yet!

Our Horns started slow (Mommy and Daddy tried to keep the obscenities to a minimum), but they rallied and came out with another notch in the W column!! Thank goodness!

No pictures from Toys R Us since Andrew didn't participate too much while we were there, but of course, Mommy got some of Andrew in his UT garb. At least in the first picture, he is posing sweetly for me!

America's Past Time

Today, we celebrated Labor Day by partaking in America's favorite past time for the second time this season (but is it really the country's favorite so much anymore?) Anyhow, we had gotten some gift certificates from Aunt Anh Thu and Uncle Rick so we had bought tickets to this afternoon's game thinking it would be a nice way to spend the holiday. The game started at 1pm, but we had decided to head to the game after his nap whenever that was. We figured that we wouldn't last the entire game anyway so why not show up late and try to stay until the end. We ended up getting the park around 2pm--right around the fourth inning.

Well, as we walked into the ballpark, we noticed quite a bit of dogs. It was Dog Day there at the park. It was so cool. They had roped off a large area where people could watch the game with their dogs (the area is usually standing room only anyhow). But there were so many dogs! And everyone was really friendly (pets and owners) and were so nice about letting other people play and pet their dog, including our little dog lover.

We finally head to our seats, which end up being pretty nice. We were six rows up in right field. Daddy called it prime seating for catching a ball; and apparently so because a woman behind us caught a ball!! But anyway, Andrew stayed seated for a bit, but I think he knows there is much more going on elsewhere. Daddy took him for a walk and then Mommy did (Mommy's walk included an ice cream purchase). But then Andrew was antsy again, so the three of us took a walk because Andrew wanted both of us to go. We ended up by the dogs again and watched some more of the game there. Then, we walked back around the park so we could catch a glimpse of the train if the Stros could hold onto the win. Luckily, they did; and Andrew got to see the train go once more.

Later that evening, we met Auntie Belinda, Uncle Steven, and Evan out at Memorial Park so the boys could run around a bit and play. Following Evan's lead, Andrew even got on the swing for a bit and seemed to like it more than before. He even laughed at Daddy while swinging. But in usual fashion, he wanted out soon enough. It was a great way to end a wonderful day.

It was really, really nice having an extra day of the weekend with Daddy. We had such a wonderful and fun family day. I so love our family time! Thanks again to Aunt Anh Thu and Uncle Rick (as well as Cara, Emma, and Brennan) for the gift certificates!
