Kavin's 1st Birthday Party

This evening was Kavin's 1st birthday party. We were still in League City this afternoon because Andrew wanted to take a nap at the grandparents' house. He ended up taking an hour and 45 minute nap (versus his normal hour nap) already making us behind schedule. And we had to still drive up to our house to pick up the gift and Daddy.

We were about an hour late and the party was in full swing. Andrew was shy at first not knowing many people. It was just about time to eat dinner so we got a plate and sat down on the living room floor to eat. Aunt Brenda had ordered from Maggiano's; and Andrew ate very well liking the eggplant parmesan (apparently no allergies like Daddy), mushroom ravoli, and gnocchi.

After we ate, we let Andrew play with Kavin's toys. I had already "talked" to Andrew about how he was going to be the oldest kid there, but you really never know what he will comprehend. Kavin tried to grab his toys back from Andrew and Andrew was relunctant to let them go, but we explained that: (1) they were his toys to begin with; (2) he was the birthday boy; and (3) he really doesn't know about sharing too much. Andrew seemed okay after a little while and afterwards, was pretty good about not fighting back when Kavin grabbed toys. And it happened a lot--mainly because I think Kavin was so interested in Andrew and just wanted to play with him and it was the only way he knew how.

There were a few other little ones there too; and Andrew was pretty good with them. The only problem was when we were playing with balloons and Andrew got rather crazy trying to catch them. He wouldn't watch where he was going and would almost run into the other babies on the floor (luckily never running into any of them) as well as some nearby adults (unluckily some of whom ended up in Andrew's path).

We did the birthday cake (which Aunt Brenda impressively made herself) and Kavin was very cute about getting his hands into his cake and then mouth. He sure caught on quickly! After we ate cake and played some more, it was time to go home.

It was a fun party and we are glad we got to share in Kavin's first birthday! Happy 1st Birthday, little man! Thanks for inviting us!

Blueberry Pancakes

This morning after another sleepover at Ngoai's and Papa's house, Andrew said he wanted to make pancakes. As usual, he requested a Mickey Mouse shaped pancake to which I abided. He then wanted to put blueberries for his eyes, nose and mouth. He put them in the right place for the most part seeing how I try not to let him get too close to the stove and pan. Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture soon enough, but here is Andrew with some more pancakes he helped to make.

Garbage Man

After school today, it was really nice out and I asked Andrew if he wanted to go to the park to which he of course said "yes". So, we went to Pumpkin Park (or how we call it) across the street from St. Luke's.

Andrew usually likes to pretend to drive the bus and go to various places, but today, it was all about pretending he was driving a garbage truck and we would make stops at houses. We even pretended to pick up trash cans and dump them into the back of the truck which was the stairs. Such a little nut, but he's my little nut! :)

Fire Truck Park

During my research for venues for Andrew's upcoming birthday party, I came across a park in West University with an old fire truck for the kids to play on. It looked like fun and figured Andrew would really like it. So, we headed there today after speech therapy.

Andrew was only mildy interested in the fire truck it turns out. I thought he would be more into it, but he probably played on it for about fifteen minutes of the hour we were there. He played mostly with the dump trucks they had there and we played pretend trains of course.

It's a really cute park with lots of things to do. Andrew already asked to go back on the car ride home. Most definitely.

Happy 35th Month Birthday

We are one month away from Andrew turning three years old!! Every month, he grows up a little more and I have to say, I am a little sad that he is growing up too fast, but I am so happy to see him develop and flourish into a little boy is so amazing!!

Andrew's speech continues to improve week after week. He is mimicing and repeating everything we say. He will constantly surprise by saying something that we have said a long time ago; and he will just whip it out in perfect context. Some of his little sayings that come out of his mouth are so funny. For example, he will literally say things are "so funny." Or he will say "Oh, my goodness!" There was one time we were playing trains and he exclaims, "Excuse me, ma'am. I'm coming through!" He refers to me more as "Mommy" rather than "Mama", which still makes me a little sad, but I am getting more used to it. Andrew is also using the word "and" and prepositions a lot more such as "in my room". He is also learning superlatives like "I am faster".

He can be a little smart aleck too. One time, Ngoai said "I love you." And up to this point, he will say "love you" back. But the other day, he calmly replied "I know." We just cracked up laughing!

Our little track master is still very much into trains. And in the spirit of The Polar Express, Andrew tells me all the time that his trains are going to the "North Pole". If I ask him, where else is the train going, he will answer "Sea World", "Galleria", and "Kemah".

When we play pretend kitchen, restaurant, drive through, or train concessions, we will ask him how much the food costs and he always replies $3. Furthermore, he will serve food on a pretend tray or platter and hold it like a real waiter would. We joke it's because he goes out to restaurants too much. He still loves Play Doh and is pretty good using the molds.

Andrew also loves to pretend he's a garbageman picking up trash for his garbage truck. He will collect garbage and dump them in a pile in the living room. This has also carried over to the grocery store where he will hang on the side of the cart and say he's a garbageman. Even if we don't need a cart, he will still want one just to ride on it. He almost always refuses to ride in them now--only if I am adamant about it and give him a reason like he needs to drink his beverage in the cart. And when we sometimes play with Andrew, he will get pillows and blanket for us to lay on. I have to give him credit for making us more comfortable when we are playing with our little man.

We have started giving Andrew thirty minutes of computer time to play educational games such as pbskids.org or nickjr.com. Thus far, Andrew likes to specifically play games on Caillou (a train track game and cooking game), Max and Ruby, and Team Umizoomi. He also now has enough attention span to watch feature length movie. Thus far, he's watched Polar Express and The Cat in the Hat.

As for eating, Andrew still loves dim sum, spaghetti, alfredo, and grilled cheese sandwiches. He loves kolaches and waffles for breakfast. He asks for Asian noodles (lo mein and soba noodles) all the time now particularly when we eat at the mall. He loves to eat the broccoli with sauce whether it be alfredo or teriyaki. And his favorite fruits are oranges and blueberries.

If we give Andrew two choices of food, he will almost wants both of them. But of course, Daddy and I only offer up things we would be okay with giving him. Lately, Andrew has been eating lots and lots of oranges and drinking freshly squeezed orange juice since oranges have been really sweet as of late. For some reason, Andrew seems to prefer when Ngoai makes it for him rather than by Mommy!

With the colder weather, Ngoai and Papa like to light their fireplace. Andrew wasn't so sure at first, but will now ask to light it. And the second time, they were going to light it with him, he went over to their drawer in the kitchen to get the lighter. It's so funny what he remembers.

Our almost three year old grows more independent and wants to try to do things for himself more and more...even if Mommy and Daddy aren't ready or willing for them. For awhile now, he's been able to get an Eggo waffle out of the freezer, use the step stool to put it in the toaster, and push down the toaster button to warm it up. He also loves to get water and ice from the fridge using his tippy toes and not the step stool. He is also much better about playing by himself at times (even though he will still ask for us to play with him), but even more so that he can play on a different floor than us for a while.

Andrew can be a little punk always trying to procrastinate and negotiate things. When we tell him it's time to do something like night night, he will first offer up "five more minutes." When I say "no", he drops down to "four minutes" and will continue to countdown. Same thing for night night books. Drew likes to fight nap and bedtime, which makes it all the more fun putting him to bed. He will always ask for at least two more books than normally allotted (two for naps and five for bedtime).

We still haven't seen any interest in pooping the potty from Andrew. We have tried bribes and whenever we try to offer him something for doing the deed, he says he will pee in the potty. Nice try, but I don't think so.

One peculiar thing that Andrew does lately is that he will say "I no know how do it." And he says it to things that he knows full well how to do as well as somethings that he doesn't. I think he gets a little lazy sometimes and just wants us to help. Moreover, something that is pretty annoying or frustrating is that Drew can be indecisive at times and will cry when he changes his mind. We could definitely do without the meltdowns! Argh.

He uses logic to try to get his way. He will say "Mommy tired, go night night" so I will lay down with him in his room or lay down in my room instead of going downstairs after I tuck him in. And he will say "Mommy dirty, take shower" to try to get me to take a shower with him.

Drew has been really sad about Christmas time being over and still talks about Santa. He has even asked us when Santa is going to come back to our house and if Santa is going to come down the chimney again. He will even clear off the ottoman so that Santa can come down the chimney without difficulty.

He's getting excited about his birthday as we have been talking about it more and more. When you ask him how old he is going to be, he will usually answer "almost three."

His counting and alphabet continue to get better and can recognize most of the letters. He can count to thirteen sometimes without mistake. Andrew sings more and more all the time and can sing all the words to Down by the Station and more words to The Eyes of Texas.

Drew is still very concerned about others and enjoys being with other people. He wants to make sure that we all sit together to eat at the table. Andrew loves socializing including his little classmates at school.

Drew has a decent memory when he wants to. The things that he remembers are crazy, but then again, he can't remember other things that he should (like he needs to clean up before he gets new toys out to play with). For example, a few times this month, we will be sitting at the dining table before dinner and ask us to "hold hands" which was his way of asking us to say grace. To be quite honest and as bad as it sounds, we don't say grace every night. So, Andrew has only witnessed it a few times, but it's amazing how fast he catches on.

Here's the "almost three" year old playing in his kitchen.

Evan's 4th Birthday Party

After Liya's party, we headed home and tried to get Andrew to go down for his nap. Thankfully, he went down easily and was asleep by 2:15pm. The poor kid must have been really worn out because he slept until almost 3:45pm. It always seems to happen when we have something going on after nap, Andrew will sleep longer than usual. And this afternoon was no differnt. He finally woke up and we left the house as soon as we could and headed to Evan's fourth birthday party, which started at 330pm.

We arrived about thirty minutes late to Monkey Bizness which is one of those massive inflatable places. It was cool because Evan's party had their own play room where all the kids were running and any playing. The party was already well underway. We said hello to lots of people and sent Drew on his way to go play. He was really hesitant so Daddy went with him, which helped a little. But what really did the trick was Max. Max and Andrew were so happy to see each other. And Max immediately took Andrew's hand to go off and play. And Andrew gladly followed. It was so sweet.

After about an hour more of playing, it was time for snacks and cake. Andrew got this huge piece of chocolate cake and for some strange reason was determined to finish it all. People were finished eating and leaving and there Andrew was still working on the cake. But that's ok because it gave us time to talk and hang out for a while longer.

And since we were already in the area, Daddy and I talked beforehand about going to eat barbeque at Rudy's. Coincidentally, others including Aunt Bee and Uncle Steven had the same notion. So, a small group of us headed to the restaurant immediately following for a little after party. It was a great way to end the day! We had such a great time. We all loved seeing so many of our friends that we don't get to see near often enough with all our different busy schedules.

Last, but not least...Happy Birthday, Evan! We can't believe you are four years old already and such a big boy!! We love you so very much!!

Liya's 3rd Birthday Party

This morning was Liya's third birthday party. Liya is one of our old friends from Gymboree. We were excited to go because we hadn't seen her and her family in so long--Andrew especially. He kept asking when we were going to the party. This boy has no patience!!

The theme of the party was animals; and boy, were there were animals galore!? Liya's mom, Sabrina, had hired people to bring in an entire petting zoo including llama, sheep, ducks, rabbits, and many more. They also had a pony to ride, which Andrew didn't care for much. Weird considering how into pony rides he was a few months before. I guess we can blame it on change of opinion or the fact that his two little buddies, Palmer and Gareth, were more into the playscape and inflatable. The boys were constantly climbing up the ladder and going down the slide.

Andrew also got his face painted and picked out (from a few offered selections) a snake. Drew also kept asking to eat the cake, but we told him he had to eat lunch first. Sabrina and Amir had a crazy delicious food spread to which Andrew ate very well dining on lasagna, fruit, cheese, and crackers. But not soon enough, it was time to go back into the moonbouncer with the two boys.

After we sang Happy Birthday, Andrew chose a cupcake over cake. For some reason, Daddy put Andrew on his shoulders during this time. It stands to reason that Daddy was going to have crumbs all in his hair. Silly Daddy!!

As the party was winding down, Palmer went to ride the pony before he left; and we used that to our advantage. Once I told Andrew that Palmer was going on the pony, Andrew was more than willing to go for a ride himself. Peer pressure! Love it. Then, it was time to head back home.

It was a great party; it was so good to see some old friends and share in Liya's special day. Happy Birthday, Liya!! We had such a terrific time.

Playing Doctor

I have to say that I have been loving the curriculum from past few weeks at school because I know how much Andrew has been loving them.

This week, the kids learned about doctors and nurses. When I read the bullentin board outside the classroom, I read it really quicked and comprehended that the kids played doctor. Admittedly, I was immediately taken aback. I just envisioned something perverse...and totally without reason. But as I continued to read, it was evident there was no need to worry. Come to find out, the patients were the dolls and babies in the classroom and not the other classmates. I know, my brain is rather sick and twisted at times.

And for art, the kids painted bones. Andrew told me how bones are inside our body. Too cute!

Emily's 3rd Birthday Party

Today was Emily's third birthday party. Coincidentally enough, it was at Wonderwild just like Quinn's party last week. Good thing for us, Andrew really enjoyed it.

We were actually late to the party because lunch ran ridicuously long. Andrew had eaten really well; we had to actually wait for him while he finished eating. And to make matters worse (or make us even more late), he had teriyaki sauce all over his shirt snd pants. So, we ran home first to change him.

We were about half an hour late and the party was already underway. Andrew made up for lost time and started playing. He went straight for the trains and was even better this time around. Later, he followed Emily to the jumping pillow and they were so cute on it. He climbed the playscape and the inflatable slide just like last time. But this time, he did get his face painted. He asked for a train, but the lady wasn't sure if she could a nice one. So, we told Andrew to pick out another one and he finally settled on a snake on his arm.

And then it was back to more playing before we had to head back to the room for food and drinks. When we came into the room, there were a few spots at the table where Emily was sitting and two other tables that were completely empty. I asked Andrew if he wanted to sit at one of the empty tables wanting to save Emily's tables for family and close friends. But Andrew so wanted to go sit by her. I asked Donnie if it was okay and he said it was so I let him. I wasn't sure how much Andrew would eat since he ate so well at the restaurant, but I guess since all the other kids were eating, he ate too.

And then, he was totally ready for cake. As the waited, it was easy to see it was getting tired, but fighting it. Daddy was worried about the sugar intake would deter the nap, but I reassured him that Andrew wouldn't eat much cake (he never does). But true to form, he made a liar out of me and ate almost the entire slice!! Luckily, he went down for a nap shortly after we got home.

We had a wonderful time at the party as always! Happy 3rd Birthday, Emily!! We are so glad that we got to celebrate your third birthday with you!! Thanks for including us on your special day!
