We had originally planned on taking Andrew to Dewberry Farms this morning, but since he was still a little under the weather (runny nose), we thought it might be a good idea to save it for another day. I wasn't sure if bales of hay, animal hair, and whatever else might be would be out there would be too much for Andrew. And to be honest, Daddy and I weren't feeling 100% ourselves so it probably was all for the best.
First, Daddy was really sweet this morning taking Andrew, who had woken up early, to the grocery story so Mommy could sleep in a little (until after 8am).So while Daddy was making breakfast, I suggested to him that we take Andrew to the Houston Fire Museum instead since it was in downtown (much much closer than Dewberry), indoors, and would probably be more low key than Dewberry. So, I got onto the laptop to get the directions and hours for the museum. Come to find a notice for Firefest 2010 which happened to be going on today. I read through the description and thought Andrew would really like it. I showed Andrew some pictures and he was totally into going there. Daddy was on board to going there so too so we quickly got ready and left the house. It was already after 9am and the fire truck parade started at 10am and I knew that Andrew would really get a kick out of that. I wasn't sure if we would be able to make it especially since the festival was located at the training center near Hobby Airport--about a 15-20 minute drive from our house.
We made it to the parking lot for the shuttle bus a little before 10am so I wasn't sure if we were going to make it. And Andrew was thrilled getting to ride a bus!! Thankfully, the parade started like five minutes late so we still got to see it from outside the festival gates, which worked out great. Andrew was so excited. One of the fire trucks even threw out some beads right in front of Andrew. Daddy and Andrew kept one and gave away two to other kids. It was really sweet. They also let off some fireworks during the parade too. It was strange seeing fireworks in daylight and weren't as impressive as during night time, but still good.
After the parade, we entered the festival and walked over to a bouncer in the shape of a house that had some fire safety pictures. The kids were supposed to go in and check it out. The two cadets were sweet and let Andrew jump all by himself so he wouldn't get trampled by the bigger kids. Andrew was hesitant and just jumped closed to the window where I was standing. Since he wasn't too into jumping, I had him come out so the other kids could have a turn. Also, when the kids came out of the bouncer, they were all rewarded with a plastic firefighter helmet, which Andrew loved!!
Then, we walked around the grounds to check in things out. We walked by the antique firetrucks that were very cool. And then, Andrew spotted a train. He's like a radar! Daddy took Andrew to check out the train as well as a flipped over bus. I guess the cadets use them for practice. I joked with Daddy that with all the fire trucks, Andrew still wanted to see the train. It always comes back to trains!
Later, as we went over to the area where they let kids use a hose to put out fake fires, we saw a policeman. In the past, Andrew has been shy to talk to them, but this time he actually said hello. And the police officer was kind to give Andrew a police badge sticker. He was very happy.
We continued on over to the water hoses. Andrew said he wanted to try--not a surprise considering how much he loves to hold regular water hoses. Luckily, Daddy was able to help Andrew hold and point the hose so it worked out great. It was really cute.
Next, we walked over to the demonstration area where some of the fightfighter were going to show us how they put out a fire with foam instead of water. We tried watching for a little bit, but it got pretty smokey so we walked away so Andrew wouldn't breath in any of the smoke.
After something to eat (turkey leg for us but nothing for Andrew because he didn't want anything), he said that he wanted to go the fire truck bouncer. So, we got in line and waited our turn. Andrew was more into jumping this time around and jumped for several minutes. After he got out, we decided it was a good time to leave so Andrew could go home and rest with a nap.
As we left and the rest of the day, Andrew kept asking for more Fire Fest. Poor kid doesn't understand that it is only a once a year event. But he really had a great time--we all did. Everything was very well done and was a lot of fun. I am so glad things worked out the way they did and we had the opportunity to go. We will definitely try to go again next year.
