Sugar Creek with the Chengs

For our outing this morning, we were meeting up with Anh and the boys (minus Noah who stayed at home with his grandma) to go play at Sugar Creek. We hadn't been in a long time and the boys had a great time.

But poor Brendon wasn't too sure about it--I had to take him up myself because Josh and Andrew kept leaving him. But quickly thereafter, he got the hang out of it and was out with the big boys. Soon, Jessica and Nathan met up with us (Ally was in Austin with her cousin and baby Lawson was at home with his grandma). The boys did great and played with each other well.

After, we went to McDonald's for lunch and the fun continued there with the boys playing in the playground there.

And of course, I had a nice time too getting to chat with Anh and Jessica!!

YMCA Summer 2012 Soccer Team New England: Last Practice

We had our last practice for the season today. It started out a little strange--no one had showed up by the time practice started at 530pm. Andrew was a little distraught about it too asking "Where my friends?"

Then, four players showed up (three of them being the triplets). We talked to the other coach who was having practice on the other side of the gym. They didn't have many kids as well and we were already sharing the space with the game going on on the other half of the gym. So, we decided to scrimmage one another at the end of practice.

We had already lost to them earlier in the season, but we just wanted the kids to get in some playing time. But lo and behold, our kids were on fire!! Cooper scored three goals and Andrew scored two. Both boys were so happy they finally scored and multiple times!!

After practice, Andrew kept saying "I scored two goals!" and "I'm proud of my teammates!" So sweet! And since he did so great today, we let him pick dinner. Sure enough, he picked Olive Garden!!

And go figure, I didn't take any video at practice today. Boo for me! But here are some more pictures from this morning at the pool.

Swimming with the Greenes

Andi was sweet and invited us to go swimming at their gym up in Humble. They are members at Lifetime Fitness and they had two pools. Since it was so nice outside, we decided to go outside for our swim. Andrew and the boys were so good! They swam and played nicely and shared their toys with no problems!! It was awesome! And the Greenes even saw their neighbor, Jen and her daughter Olivia, who joined us as well.

We stayed to have a little bit of lunch and then back to the pool for more swimming. Gavin is swimming exceptionally well and I think it motivated Andrew to be a little more brave. He was going under the water more like to get the whale (that the boys spent a long time throwing back and forth to each other). Drew also wanted to wear a life jacket too for the deep part of the pool, which was new too.

Anyways, it was a fantastic play date. Both Andrew and I has just the best time!!

Batman Brave and the Bold

Just wanted to share a photo of Andrew and Daddy playing a little Batman Brave and the Bold today. I love how Andrew is sitting so close to James and how intense he is!!

YMCA Summer 2012 Soccer Game #6: Team New England vs. Philly

For today's game, Andrew played essentially played three out the four quarters playing both offense and defense. He had a couple of good gets and saves, but wasn't able to score. He wasn't able to keep the ball long enough to score. But we know he can do so hopefully, another time. But I have to say the team we played was really good--probably the best team in our group. So, it was understandable that Andrew wasn't able to score. Sadly, we didn't win, but the kids played hard and tried.

Ships and Sails

Andrew's last session of summer camp ended today. He's been having such a ball. We are both sad it's ended so soon. I even asked the Day School office if there were any openings for the fifth and final session, but they are full.

Anyways, the class has been talking about Ships and Sails these past two weeks. Here is is this morning painting his pirate scope and his latest art work from earlier in the week that he brought home today.

Jerry Built with the Hobbs

This evening, we met up with the Hobbs for dinner. Joanna threw out Jerry Built, which is a new hamburger joint that we had been meaning to try, so we readily accepted.

Frank and Andrew drew on the massive chalkboard as well as played with cars. Towards the end, they ended up playing Angry Birds on the iPad. But all the playing gave us a chance to talk with Brian and Joanna.

It was a fun evening and we enjoyed it very much. We did talk about more restaurants that we want to try for the future so we will definitely be doing it again.

These were the boys goofing off when we were saying goodbye.

The Sotos

This evening, we drove out to Humble to visit with the Soto family. Carlos was a classmate of James back at Rice and we got to know him and his wife, Sarah, pretty well during those two years. After business school, they moved up to North Carolina, but we have kept in touch over the years. And they were visiting Houston with their two sons, Nicholas and Michael.

They were staying at Carlos's parents house and they were kind enough to invite us up there for dinner and swimming. Sadly, the weather wasn't cooperating and we weren't able to hit the pool. But we came bearing gifts of super hero action figures for both boys and Andrew packed some toys of his own. So, the boys played a lot of super heroes and also watched some video on their respective tables because they couldn't all hear while watching one.

We had an amazing time seeing them again and getting to spend time with them. And Andrew loved playing with both boys. He even yelled out "I love you!" when we were leaving. But he said it for all of us, we do love them and were so happy that we got to see them!! Hope the next reunion doesn't take as long.

Happy 53rd Month Birthday

Our little boy continues to grow like a weed into such a little boy.

The video game addiction is starting early. He loves the Wii Batman Brave and the Bold Game as well Super Hero Squad. He sometimes gets lazy with hitting the bad guys, but he is quickly learning to hit the buttons as fast as he can when he is motivated to.

Andrew still loves to draw on white paper. There are a lot of drawings of good guys and bad guys...normally involving a bank robbery. One day, he decided to draw up some blue prints for a house and pretended to build it out of our couch cushions, pillows, and blankets with his handy tool box.

His favorite things to watch are Curious George, Word World, Super Hero Squad, Madagascar, and Lion King (in preparation for the Broadway show that is coming to Houston).

As for his favorite toys to play with, he still loves LEGOs. He plays with a lot more super hero toys and action figures. He likes to put the good guys versus the bad guys. He is totally into super heroes now and even says "because I am getting into them more" which is a repeat of what I have been saying. His favorite super hero was Superman, but might be Batman now. He also likes Spider-man and Captain America, who is probably his favorite Avenger.

On the iPad, Andrew's favorite apps are Smurfs, Bugsy (they have versions for Math and Reading and for pre-school and kindergarten), and Teach Me (another educational app). We tell Andrew sometimes that he has to do the learning apps and earn a certain amount of coins (by answering questions correctly) before he can play his more fun games or watch video. He also plays a little bit of Bakery Story and Angry Birds.

His addition and subtraction are coming along nicely. He will tell me that "1 and 2 is 3" and "5 and 5 is 10" and holds up fingers accordingly sometimes.

He is also starting to read. He has known the sounds for the letters, but hasn't been able to blend them to make the word. But the BOB books have definitely helped that or it finally came together for him. He is also memorizing words as well and I can tell he looks at the pictures for some guidance as well.

As for the books that he likes for us to read to him, Andrew usually selects Curious George or Super Hero Squad books...or any super hero books for that matter.

Andrew's speech is still making great strides. Ms. Gretchen has been pleased with his progress. He is getting a lot more sounds as well as putting the correct sounds in the middle and end of words. Andrew is really doing better about being more responsible for his talking. We have asked him to think about the word and the sounds and what he is saying.

She has started to do her evaluation for his four year old assessment and he scored a 96% in auditory comprehension/language or is at an equivalent level of five year and nine month old kids. She'll do the speech evaluation the next few sessions of speech.

He is taking less and less naps now--maybe 1-2 a week if he's at school. He does say to me though "I rested." At home, I can put him down later like around 2pm and he will end up falling asleep. At school, they start nap around 1pm and he's not tired by then. But if he does skip his nap, he is pretty good about going to bed early. Sometimes, he is in bed by 8pm and asleep by 830pm.

Since they are in season, he has been eating lots of blueberries, grapes, and strawberries. He has also been in a brownie kick. He loves to help make it as well. When we were in San Antonio, Nonna asked him if he wanted to help her make some. He, of course, said yes. And then he proceeded to ask where the box was meaning the mix. Poor kid has only seen Mommy make it from a box whereas Nonna makes it from scratch!

Andrew still eats lots of meat and broccoli. His favorite restaurants are Pei Wei, Chick Fil A, and Olive Garden. We went to a restaurant called Majorca and he totally killed their beef kabob with saffron rice. He liked it so much that he wanted to order another one. He also likes some meat with a dipping sauce made from soy sauce, sugar and water.

He tries to drink Gatorade whenever he can, but will still drink a lot of water (with ice) and milk.

Drew loves to ask when he is turning five but knows that he turns five on "February 24". He always talks about what kind of party he wants such as airplanes, super hero, pirate, and jungle (Madagascar). He will also premise what Papa would make for the party. For example, he says that Papa should make airplanes out of cardboard again instead of doing a bouncey house or something. He is so into the idea of my dad building stuff for him.

He also talks a lot about what costume he is going to be for Halloween and what presents he is going to ask for at Christmas.

Our SLDS camper is really enjoying summer camp especially going to the "Big Room" where Ms. Brandt and Ms. Ford teach them more about the theme of the session. He will tell me things about the Artic and the Antarctic. Oh, and his favorite part just might be Messy Day. The first one he was a little apprehensive. I told him if he didn't want to get wet or messy, he could just watch. But when I talked to him and Ms. Edgett that afternoon, both of them said he loved it!! And after that, he has looked forward to it every single week. One day, he was so excited because they made a river and dammed it up.

Andrew is very excited about the upcoming school year. He is sad about not being in Mr. Sanchez's and Ms. Edgett's class, but he is very proud that he will be upstairs in Pre K.

Our little athlete is playing offense in soccer again, which is nice because sometimes we need some help in that department. And he's been doing great with swimming and putting his head under water. Luckily, he is taking in less water in his mouth and nose. And he has been really happy swimming at Rice. Also, Andrew has still been enjoying gymnastics. He was a little nervous about his new coach for the summer, Coach Riggio, but he likes him now. He does say that he wants Coach Cortney again though.

Some of the things Andrew has been saying this past month include "uh huh" and "nuh uh" which I am not that thrilled with. But I can't really say much because James and I both do it.

A few of his little phrases include "I got to tell you something...I love you!" and he will tell James when he leaves for work "Have a good day!" or "I'll see you later." Daddy also made a day trip into San Antonio and we weren't going to go with him so Andrew told him "You can go see Nonna. Tell Nonna I said 'hi'."

Another day, he told me that he loves me because he misses me when I am gone. One day when we were at the library, I was looking for DVDs for him. He then starts looking himself and says he is looking for How I Met Your Mother for me. I totally cracked up laughing.

There are numerous time when we leave the truck at Rice. One morning when we did that, Andrew chimes in "I got an idea. You go to school with me. Mommy bring you to Rice. You bring the truck back."

Speaking of Rice, Andrew has recently told me that he wants to work at Rice with Daddy and I can come eat lunch with them. About a week later, he said that he wants to take care of his kids while Daddy goes to work. Then, he will drop them off at school and then go to work.

Some other things that Andrew talks about is how he wants to go to Cars Land, New York, Philly to see Bandit (as opposed to his human family members up there), and Vegas.

In one regard, I am a little sad about his growing independence. He asks more to wear t-shirts and not polo knits because they make his neck itchy (I think from the sweat when he plays outside). He loves his super hero tees. One day, he was going to wear his Superman shirt and he asked to wear his Superman underwear all on his own! When I let him, he was so proud he went to show his Daddy.

Here is a video of our 53rd month old working on his swimming.

Happy 1st Birthday, Matthew

After the game, we headed straight to Party City to pick out balloons for Matthew's birthday. Of course, Andrew wanted to get green balloons for his little brother. But we also picked red for my favorite color and blue for Daddy's. And I told Andrew that we should get the ones with the "1" on them since Matthew was turning one today.

Next, we drove to the cemetery to release the balloons. As we sent our balloons up to Heaven, Andrew said "Happy Birthday, Matthew. I love you. I hope you have a good birthday."

Then, we just came home and spent the day alone. I had told James that I just wanted it to be just us today. I didn't think I could handle much anything else. We spent the day hanging out at the house. James and Andrew played the Wii some; and then we all went swimming at Rice.

We actually had a little prayer service down in League City yesterday with Ngoai. I know I had said I wanted it to be just us, but I don't know how to exactly set up the prayer alter so I needed my mom's help. In the Buddhist religion, you pray for loved ones on the day of their death versus the day of the births. You can do this at the temple or with family and friends, but I couldn't do either. I just knew it would be too hard. After Ngoai and I prayed, we asked Andrew if he wanted to pray for Matthew. He was very sweet. He told Matthew "Happy Birthday. I love you. I miss you." He even teared up a little bit.

I know it's been so hard on him. He doesn't understand death; and no four year old should have to. He asks me questions sometimes I don't even know the answer to. Tonight, he asked me about why people have to die and why can't doctors fix everything. I feel so badly that he lost his little brother. I am sad that so many of his friends have siblings here on Earth and Andrew doesn't. It's just so unfair that Andrew has had to go through this.

I knew it was going to be a hard week for me, but I didn't know how hard it was going to be. This past Sunday was the 15th; and it was the day we learned about the hydrops and from that moment on, all the events that followed were set in motion. I just keep thinking about what we were doing one year ago today from being at home that morning getting the call from Dr. Kirshon about delivering Matthew that evening to going to the hospital and waiting and then the delivery room and the rest of that night. I think about holding Matthew and not wanting to let go ever. I keep wishing that there was more time with him.

A year later and I am still wishing. Wishing things could have been different. Wishing he was with us now. We would be having his first birthday party with friends and family. He would probably be walking and talking by now. We would have had an entire year with him instead of incredibly short time we did. Then, I have to remind myself that had he survived, he might not be walking or talking. The doctors said he would have had severe neurological and physical issues. I would give anything to have him here with us, but I wouldn't want him to live that way. I have to find solace in that there is a reason for everything. As much as we miss our little boy, it probably was for the best, which breaks my heart a little more.

It's been the hardest year of my life. I miss Matthew every day and still grieve for him. Yes, there are days that are better and the pain isn't so raw. But there will always be a sadness I feel because part of me is missing. And I feel different. I am not the same person that I was a year ago. There is an emptiness that I feel all the time. A gaping hole in my heart that will never be healed.

I used to be scared of dying. But now, I find comfort in that when I die, I will be reunited with Matthew. By no means am I saying that I want to die now. I want to be here for James and Andrew. I want to grow old with my dear husband and watch Andrew grow into a man and have a family of his own. But I do find myself more welcoming of death than I used to. I know there is something more, or rather someone, for me in Heaven now.

Happy 1st Birthday, Matthew! Daddy, Mommy, and Andrew miss you and love you so very much.

Enya - If I Could Be Where You Are

Where are you this moment?
only in my dreams.
You're missing, but you're always
a heartbeat from me.
I'm lost now without you,
I don't know where you are.
I keep watching, I keep hoping,
but time keeps us apart

Is there a way I can find you,
is there a sign I should know,
is there a road I could follow
to bring you back home?

Winter lies before me
now you're so far away.
In the darkness of my dreaming
the light of you will stay

If I could be close beside you
If I could be where you are
if I could reach out and touch you
and bring you back home
Is there a way I can find you
Is there a sign I should know
Is there a road I could follow
to bring you back home to me

YMCA Summer 2012 Soccer Game #5: Team New England @ Dallas

For today's game, Andrew played both offense and defense. He played nearly the entire game and did a lot of running. Indoor soccer is definitely at a faster pace!!

He had a shot on goal, but the goalie made the save. But it was still a valiant effort on his part and we were happy with his play.

SLDS Super Heroes

At drop off this morning, Andrew and Jonathan immediately began making their super hero capes for the day. It's been for a good while now that Andrew plays with Jonathan probably the most at school and they are becoming such good little buddies.

YMCA Summer 2012 Soccer Game #4: Team New England vs. Kansas City

At the start of today's game, the other team had only four players while we had five.
Playing a man up didn't last very long as another one of their players showed up shortly after. So, both teams were even with five players.

I am happy to report that one of the triplets, Cooper. scored. I was so proud of him and happy for him. Poor kid has been trying so hard to score a goal and coming so close.

As for our little guy, Andrew played very well. He ran around like a mad man chasing after the ball. And he was exhausted afterward having played the entire game like all the other kids.

YMCA Summer 2012 Soccer Team New England

We had team photos this morning for Team New England.

And Granddad is in town visiting us, but I totally sucked and didn't take any pictures of him with Andrew in his jersey.
